Seek MORE with Sarah

Updated: Jun 21

As of this Summer, we will be highlighting our five lovely interns, who are part of the MORE Magazine team. We welcome you to seek MORE by reading their stories on who they are and how they came to MORE Magazine.

My name is Sarah Oliver, I just finished my freshmen year at the Kelley School of Business at Indiana University-Purdue University. I’m pursing a degree in marketing and I hope to use that within the beauty industry somehow. I am still learning what I want to do exactly in my future career, however beauty has always been a passion of mine and I think it’s an industry that can be very empowering for women. My dream is to work for a company that has the goal of doing just that, empowering women. I want to help build the confidence of other women and help others feel comfortable in their own skin.

When I was growing up, I struggled a lot with insecurities about how I look and I would compare myself to everyone around me. I was always bullied by other girls that I saw as prettier than me.

8th grade is when it got the worst for me. I got involved with a group of girls that didn’t have the best mind set and always looked down on themselves. This made me adopt the same way of thinking and I started struggling with eating. I remember one girl asked me at lunch one day, “are you really going to eat all that?" This stuck with me for a long time. I didn’t have access to a gym, so I would stay up until my whole family was asleep and workout secretly. I felt ashamed of it. I didn’t feel comfortable with myself and I was obsessed with being the smallest version of myself.

This mindset continued for a few years into high school, but nobody noticed I was struggling because I kept it to myself. Eventually I learned to surround myself with better people and started changing my way of thinking. I found girls on social media that preached feeling comfortable with how you are and learning to love yourself. I still struggle with these thoughts sometimes to this day; however, I am now learning how to love me for me and be healthy.

College has really helped me find my self love. I found a group of friends that are always there for me, something I never really had in high school. I also have developed a healthy relationship with the gym and food. My goal now is to surround myself with women that want to build each other up. I joined the group, Women in Business at IUPUI and I found women that push each other to succeed.

I applied for the internship position at MORE because of the goals that the company has and the impact they strive to make. It is exactly the kind of company I want to work for. Not only am I now working for a company that fits my passions, I am also working alongside women that have similar goals. To me, working for MORE means putting out information that builds others up and help’s them “seek MORE” by pushing through the insecurities they have and finding what makes them unique.
